The 5 denotes the use of 5 speakers or channels; right front, center, left front, right rear, and a left rear. The.1 indicates a subwoofer for the low-frequency effects. For most home setups, 5.1 channels is adequate, however, some common configurations add an additional two surround channels, called Dolby Digital Plus 7.1. These addit... products, articles

Everybody talks about screen resolutions on HDTV sets, people tend to forget about the other important part of the high-def experience: 5.1-channel surround sound. Home Theater Setup -- Update, v 2.0

Got a chance over the weekend to put up my acoustic panels, and run the audio wiring through the attic and place wall plates at all the speaker locations. I was also able to relocate the components to the front of the room so i could move the seating back about 2-3' to the very back of the room for better viewing. Looking at turning this into a 7.1, as im thinking about going with rocket RS850's for the fronts, if they aren't too tall.
Still gottafind stands for the surrounds, as they're on my ghetto-fab av123 boxes that my fronts came in :P
